Here are a few ideas for a weeklong stay discovering Bayeux, the Bessin and Normandy, to match with your moods and those of climate ...

■ Day 1 : discover the town on Saturday morning, stroll through the great market of Saint Patrick. You can then enjoy the historical town, the Cathedral and the bustling shopping street or take a walk on the pedestrian path along the river Aure.

■ Day 2 : The D.Day landing beaches. You'll want to tread the sand of historical beaches such as Utah and Arromanches. You will find yourself deeply moved just taking a step on American soil of the cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach in Colleville, and you will feel like losing yourself in the lunar landscape of the Pointe du Hoc.

■ Day 3 : the twentieth century. After a morning visiting one of our War Memorial museums (Arromanches, the Caen Memorial), you can relax on beaches as wonderful as the famous Omaha Beach and pick from various activities (landsailing, picnic picnic, swim for less chilly)

■ Day 4 : The Medieval Bayeux. Take a step back a good 1000 years and discover the treasures of medieval Bayeux by visiting the Queen Matilda tapestry museum and hearing the story of William the Conqueror, King of England. The Bayeux tapestry is a Unesco World Heritage Site.

■ Day 5 : The sea, the Cotentin. Dreaming of clear waters and breathtaking landscapes ? Take the time to drive to Cherbourg, St Vaast la Hougue, Barfleur and the Cotentin peninsula. Travelling around La Hague peninsula, its dunes and the Vauville palm plantation will eventually have you taken with the mild climate and the rugged beauty of the place. Fancy a picnic on a sandbar ... looking for an oysters and shellfish outlet ? They are never far away.

■ Day 6 : In the midst of salt marshes stands the Mount. In the South, on right on the Normand borders, yet less than an hour away, you can not miss the Mont Saint Michel. A climb up the top of this city erected on the sea will lead you to the Eglise Saint Michel. Perched on the hill, you will see the tide rising at the speed of a galloping horse and you'll surely remember those magical moments.

The loft comes with a Home Cinema (large screen and Bose sound), should you prefer to enjoy a cosy afternoon home on a rainy day. We have a lot of films for childs and adults, including of course DDay's legend movies. However, that might not happen too often, as a well-known Normand proverb says : " Normandy is the only place where good weather comes several times a day".

Around le Petit Valhalla

A large free parking space is available just outside the property. You can leave your car there all night long. If you request so, we can open our garage to accomodate a motorcycle. During the day, there are Blue Zones to respect (limited to 4 hours of parking), but we will explain all this on arrival.
The main shopping street , bakeries, convenience stores, cinema (le Melies) , cathedral and other monuments are all at walking distance (2 to 5 minutes).

How to come

From Paris, Bayeux is direct from Gare Saint Lazare within 2hours (Paris - Cherbourg)
Bayeux train station is 15 minutes walk from our gite.

B) Health track and sports activities
For those interested in sports, a 5.5 km Heath track runs by our house.
We have bikes for you to use and the public swimming pool is also close by.

C) Contemporary art space
We are lucky to have in our town , Le Radar, a contemporary Art Space where you can discover Young talents. The Radar is located on the in the street leading to the Cathedral from Rue St Patrice. The Radar welcomes nice temporary exhibitions : ask for the program.

Idées pour un séjour d'une semaine à Bayeux à la découverte du Bessin et de la Normandie, à agencer au gré de vos humeurs et de celles du climat…

Jour1 : découverte de la ville Le samedi matin, profitez du grand marché Saint Patrice. Vous pourrez ensuite profiter de la vieille ville, de la Cathédrale et de l'animation de la rue commerçante et d'une balade sur le circuit des bords de l'Aure.

Jour 2 : Les plages du débarquement. Vous aurez envie de fouler le sable chargé d'histoire d'Utah Beach, d'Arromanches. Vous ne pourrez faire autrement que de vous émouvoir sur le sol américain du cimetière de Colleville qui surplombe Omaha Beach, ou de vous perdre dans le paysage lunaire de la pointe du Hoc.

Jour 3 : le XXème siècle. Après une visite matinale d'un de nos musées de la Mémoire (Arromanches, Le Mémorial de Caen), vous pourrez profiter des joies de la plage et découvrir par exemple la magnifique plage d'Omaha et ses activités (char à voile, pique-nique, baignade pour les moins frileux)

Jour 4 : Bayeux médiéval. Faîtes un bon de 1000 ans en arrière et découvrez le joyaux médiéval de Bayeux en visitant la tapisserie de la reine Mathilde et l'histoire de Guillaume le Conquérant, Roi d'Angleterre. La tapisserie de Bayeux est classée au patrimoine mondial de l'Unesco.

Jour 5 : La mer, le Cotentin. Envie d'eaux transparentes, de paysages du bout du monde ? Prenez le temps de monter vers Cherbourg, Saint Vaast la Hougue, Barfleur et la presqu'île du Cotentin. Le tour de la presqu'île de la Hague, les dunes et la palmeraie de Vauville finiront de vous convaincre de la douceur du climat et de la beauté sauvage des lieux. Envie d'un pique-nique sur un banc de sable…cherchez un déballeur d'huîtres et de crustacés, ils ne sont jamais très loin.

Jour 6 : au milieu des prés salés se dresse le Mont. Au Sud, aux confins de la Normandie mais à moins d'une heure de route, vous ne pouvez manquer le Mont Saint Michel et l'ascension de cette cité posée sur la mer qui vous mènera en son sommet à l'Eglise Saint Michel. Juché sur un promontoire, vous observerez la mer remonter à la vitesse d'un cheval au galop et vous vous souviendrez de ces instants magiques.

Jour 7 : Vous n'avez pas eu le temps de tout voir ? Quelques idées pour prolonger le séjour ?
